Recent The Athletic: Sports News Reviews
The writing is great, I recommend a subscription. But this is a review for the app. I don’t always read an entire article from start to finish, I tend to hop around. But minimizing the app and going back to it on Android just gives you a white screen. It’s hard to find your article again, since you have to reload the app. It’s insane how this basic feature of tabbing out to a different app and coming back in has been broken for the past year. Edit: Dropping to 1 star because they added ads.
Great service, meh app. My main gripe is that when you press a notification 9/10 times it just puts you on the main page and I have to look through it to find the story I want. Also, I love the design of the app, but there’s this weird thing where the bottom 1/4th of text is cut off on the titles for the must read section (inside the grey boxes.) It’s a small thing, but it needs to be fixed.
Once a great app with great content. But it seems the Athletic is losing a lot of local beat writers & not replacing them. It just leaves a lot of articles on local team pages by “The Athletic Staff”. That will never be worth the price of the sub. It was great while it lasted. Time to find a new app to give me my team news.
The notifications don’t even take me to the article referenced in the notification, they just return me to whatever app page I was looking at last. Sorta defeats the whole point of notifications? Also, the font size is still too cartoonishly large at the smallest setting, which visually is aggravated by the tons of unused space from the thick margins and line spacing. Please clean up your visual design for the modern era. Most people have large phones these days and want to use the real estate.
The Athletic is a 5-star product! The app is not quite all the way there cons: It can be a little hard to find what you were reading or listening to if the app closes, and it would be nice if you could slow down the podcast play speed without speeding it up first (you have to cycle through the speeds). pros: top-knotch, high-quality content, with no ads if you pay for a subscription. I follow the NBA specifically and the coverage is really really good
Content is incredible. The podcast player is not good. There is no queue, and the speed setting resets after pausing for too long. Also, the notification shade controls don’t skip within the current podcast but jump to the previous and next. If you try to get back to where you were, the app will start you over at the beginning of the episode. Still a mess, just slightless so. For articles, it’s lacking text to speech that iOS has. Content is great, can you read it to me in my car, please?
The content is great. I love the writing from The Athletic – well worth the money. The app is… Okay. There need to be more filters and content could be arranged better. The scores tab is completely useless. No rhyme or reason to the organization, with seemingly no ability to filter. The scores also don’t all seem to update properly. I think I might as well stick with just accessing the mobile version of the website.
The Athletic has great content, but watch your billing. I signed up at a discount and was charged 4-6 times a month at the full rate. They took 3 months to figure it out. In the process they cancelled a gift account I bought for someone and told me I would have to repurchase it at twice the cost. I had to come here and leave a review before I was fully refunded for all of the overcharges. They also gave me a free year, which makes repurchasing the gift sub at full price a bit easier.
The content is fantastic, of course. However, the app leaves a lot to be desired. My biggest complaint is that if it loses focus on the article you’re reading if you briefly switch to another app or follow a link. It backs you all the way out to the start page, forcing you to repeatedly search for the article you’re trying to read all over again. I prefer to load the full website in a mobile browser instead.
I really do love the content. It is the best journalism in sports. But the app leaves a lot to be desired. Scores only come through for certain teams. Other teams and leagues don’t even show scores or standings to begin with. I don’t like having to juggle back and forth between this app and another app just to view scores. Please make the app more robust from a scores standpoint! The live blogs that follow certain tournaments are great, but the sports should show up in the “scores” section of the app too.
